Annie Gainsborough

What’s my background?

I studied English Literature at Sheffield University but spent most of my time as Volunteering and Charity Coordinator for SingSoc working to inspire local school children through music and supporting the UK’s only voice-use charity “The Lary Project”. This experience led me to run for election as Activities Officer at Sheffield Students’ Union where I gained a passion for equality and liberation after working closely with “Disabled Students’ Committee”. I then spent a couple of months walking 1200km around Japan and another few working as an au pair.

At Birmingham’s John Taylor Hospice, while working in HR, Fundraising and Facilities, I conducted research into support for LGBT staff members at work and joined a Hospice UK working group developing an equalities training package for the sector. During this time I also founded a research campaign on sexism in the third sector with colleagues I’d met via the Charityworks Graduate Scheme (look out for our report @Is3rdSectSexist!)

What do I do at Gradconsult?

As a Project Consultant I bring my previous experience as a trainee on a graduate scheme to support in the design and delivery of graduate recruitment and development for our clients. I also use my time in students’ unions to share insights with our university clients and deliver training at universities for students and graduates on a range of topics from “Mindset” to “How recruiters select candidates”. My passion lies in equality and diversity so I will always take any opportunity to work in this area, and I have recently been working with a client to develop a BAME traineeship scheme.

Some other examples of projects I have been working on recently include:

  • Helping a local SME to recruit an engineering graduate including managing the advertising, communications with candidates and screening applications and video interviews
  • Conducting an adverse impact review on a legal client’s graduate recruitment to ensure there was no bias at each stage
  • Career mentoring and coaching with students and graduates
  • Researching topics for universities such as local skills gaps, unconscious bias, and regional wellbeing provision for graduates

Life loves

  • Wild swims & mountain walks
  • Rabbits
  • My little sister (and my brother I suppose!)

Pet peeves

  • People who don’t understand vegetarianism/veganism
  • Repeated sniffing instead of just blowing your nose (“Can I offer you a tissue”?)
  • People being mean
